Hiking on Spectacle Island

Explore five miles of walking trails with stunning views on Spectacle Island! Hike up to the summit of the North Drumlin, the highest elevation in the Boston Harbor, or hike the South Drumlin to escape the crowds. Both drumlins provide beautiful views of the city and surrounding harbor. Not interested in a hiking up hills? The 1.5 mile perimeter trail has no elevation gain, meets ADA guidelines for accessibility, and offers new views at every turn. Made up of 34 unique islands and peninsulas, the Boston Harbor Islands have something for everyone. Explore a historic fort, enjoy a picnic with sweeping harbor views, or sleep in a rustic campsite beneath the stars. Choose an island and plan your adventure! Public ferries to the Boston Harbor Islands operate from May – October. To purchase ferry tickets, please visit the Ferry Information page on the <a href="https://www.bostonharborislands.org/ferryschedule/">Boston Harbor Islands partnership website</a>.   <a href="https://www.bostonharborislands.org/thompson-island/">Thompson Island</a> (also known as Cathleen Stone Island) will be open to the public via public ferry every Saturday and Sunday from May – October. Ranger hikes on Spectacle Island

Join a ranger for a hike on Spectacle Island! These ranger-led tours hike up to either the North Drumlin or South Drumlin while unpacking Spectacle Island’s history, or exploring the flora and fauna of the island. Tours are offered in the summer season. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and involve some elevation gain. All programs are staffing and weather dependent, and may be cancelled at any time. Join a ranger-led tour of Fort Warren

Join the rangers of the Boston Harbor Islands for a tour of Fort Warren! Some ranger-led tours focus primarily on the military history of the fortifications, while others discuss the lives of prisoners at the fort during the Civil War. During the summer season, tours are offered daily to coincide with ferry times. These programs last about 45 minutes and are typically followed by a telling of the story of the Lady in Black. All tours are staffing and weather dependent. Check inside the Visitor Center upon arrival to Georges for updates.   Georges Island is accessible via public ferry. Cruise depart from the <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/F7DBs9PimGdGoMJKA">Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center</a> on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Cruise Boston’s outer harbor to learn about navigational aids in Boston and the uses of the islands over time. This 2-hour narrated boat tour cruises by the three still standing lighthouses in Boston Harbor: Long Island Head Light, Boston Light, and Graves Light. There will also be plenty of opportunities to take in exceptional views of both the harbor and the city. Cruises are offered on select Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer season. High Tide Trail begins at Dock Square (in front of Faneuil Hall) and moves towards the water.  King Tides can be seen on Long or Central Wharves.

For thousands of years, Boston's coastline has been filled, moved, and transformed thanks to both human and natural interventions. Learn about Boston's ever-changing coastline by following the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/boha/learn/high-tide-trail.htm">High Tide Trail</a>, a short 6-stop walking tour in downtown Boston. BOHA Art in the Park

Connect with the harbor and islands as you learn how to write a nature-inspired haiku, use watercolor paints, or experiment with photosensitive paper. Art in the Park is one of the weekly programs offered throughout the summer season on the Boston Harbor Islands. Choose a mainland park and plan your adventure! <a href="https://www.bostonharborislands.org/deer-island/">Deer Island</a> Deer Island is both rich in history and a proud symbol of environmental stewardship. Go for an invigorating jog, see the wastewater treatment plant, or simply enjoy a peaceful stroll along the dog-friendly trails. Deer Island has something to offer all who visit. <a href="https://www.bostonharborislands.org/nut-island/">Nut Island</a> Make your way down to the pier on Nut Island, a favorite spot for fishing and fabulous views. With beautiful views of harbor vistas and easy bike and car access, this little peninsula is ideal for a day spent by the sea. <a href="https://www.bostonharborislands.org/webb-memorial/">Webb Memorial</a> Webb Memorial is the perfect spot for picnicking under the pavilion or watching the boats sail by while lounging by the water. Come enjoy an island-view picnic or take a relaxing stroll along the dog-friendly walking trails. <a href="https://www.bostonharborislands.org/worlds-end/">World’s End</a> Spend a relaxing day biking, hiking, or even snowshoeing, at World’s End. Join a Stewardship Saturday trip

Stewardship Saturday programs are held throughout the year at various islands and peninsulas of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park. Please visit the park's <a href="http://www.bostonharborislands.org/calendar/">event calendar</a> on our partnership site for more information.

Join us for a Stewardship Saturday program! Work alongside park staff clearing invasive species, improving trails, and protecting important habitat areas. No previous experience is required and all training, tools, and leadership is provided. Volunteer park stewards work alongside park biologists on <a href="https://www.nps.gov/boha/getinvolved/supportyourpark/habitat-restoration.htm">habitat restoration</a> and <a href="https://www.nps.gov/boha/getinvolved/supportyourpark/citizen-scientists.htm">citizen science</a> programs throughout the year at various islands and peninsulas. Stewardship Saturday programs are held most Saturdays from May through October, usually from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. From November to April, Stewardship Saturday programs are scheduled about once a month. Explore Fort Warren

Travel back in time and explore <a href="https://www.nps.gov/places/fort-warren.htm">Fort Warren</a> on Georges Island. Designed and built from the 1830s to the 1860s, Fort Warren is an extant example of a Third System-era fortification. The United States used Fort Warren as a prisoner-of-war camp for soldiers and officers of the Confederacy. Stop by the Visitor Center to learn about the people who lived, worked, and were imprisoned on the island. Cross through the sally port, the main entrance of Fort Warren, to see the massive parade ground. Walk some sections of the top of the bastions for beautiful views of the harbor. Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit!  A small swimming area is open on Spectacle Island throughout the summer. Equipped with an outdoor spigot to rinse off sand and a changing area, there’s no better way to cool off on a hot day. Only swim in the designated swimming area, which is clearly identified on island. Please note that there is no lifeguard on duty, so keep track of others in the water and swim at your own risk. <hr /> Spectacle Island is accessible via public ferry. Pets are not permitted on the islands, but they are welcome at the mainland sites and peninsulas. Service animals are welcome.
