Due to increased human-wildlife interactions and food storage concerns, individual tent sites and group sites at Three Mile, Daisy Farm, Moskey Basin, and Caribou Island Campgrounds are currently closed. Tent and hammock camping are not permitted anywhere within the campground. Off-trail camping zones 10, 11, 12, 13, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 are closed. Shelters remain open. Closed areas will be patrolled to ensure compliance.

Tent Camping Closed at Multiple East End Campgrounds

Blooms are tested for toxin levels and monitored. Toxin levels are consistently low on Isle Royale. It is not recommended to filter water in any areas where there is surface scum, strong odors, or other evidence of a significant bloom. Blooms move around depending on wind and rain – filter water from places where blooms are not present or a different water source. It is low risk to filter water from relatively clear areas of an impacted water source.

The stream has very little water flow. Campers should bring enough water to Island Mine or plan on collecting water at Carnelian Beach to the south.

All backpacks must be stored in backpack storage areas at Three Mile and Rock Harbor campgrounds. All food and scented items are to be in the Food Storage Lockers. Containers should be kept in the Food Storage Locker when space allows or near the Food Storage Locker, do not store in tents.

Isle Royale

Isle Royale National Park is open annually from April 16 to October 31. Transportation services are offered from May to September. The island and its surrounding islands are closed to all visitors from November 1 to April 15 due to extreme winter weather conditions and for the safety and protection of visitors. This closure extends 4.5 miles out into Lake Superior from the island. Park headquarters during the winter is in Houghton, Michigan. Summer headquarters is located at Mott Island on Isle Royale.

Interpretive signs along the route explain the ecology of this island’s rich and varied plant life and the geologic origins of its rugged shores. Take your time and you will discover enough variety on this island to keep you intrigued for half a day. Shortly after this junction is a rocky outcropping that offers one of the few scenic views of Moskey Basin along this stretch of trail. This section of the Rock Harbor Trail rolls over rocky hills and dips through forested areas. Keep eyes peeled for cairns that mark the way. Eventually the trail offers views of an outer island with plenty of buildings on it. This is Mott Island—Isle Royale's Headquarters on island. About 1.9 miles from Mount Franklin Junction with the Rock Harbor Trail is the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/siskowit-mining.htm">Siskowit Mine</a>. The rest of the trek offers views of <a href="https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/rock-harbor-lighthouse.htm">Rock Harbor Lighthouse</a> and <a href="https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/edisen.htm">Edisen Fishery</a>. Daisy Farm Campground is right on the shore of Rock Harbor Channel and is one of the largest campgrounds on the island. This section between Rock Harbor and Three Mile offers picturesque views of the Rock Harbor Channel and the outer islands. The Rock Harbor Trail begins past the Rock Harbor Campground. Much of this trail transverses over rocky outcroppings and it can be difficult to find secure footing. Cairns (rock stacks) are placed on open ridges to mark the way.<br /> <br /> After hiking about 1.8 miles from Rock Harbor the trail cuts into the woods and arrives at the trailhead for <a href="https://www.nps.gov/places/suzy-s-cave.htm">Suzy's Cave</a>. Suzy's Cave is an inland sea arch carved by waves when Lake Superior's shoreline was higher. Past Suzy's Cave is the junction with the Tobin Harbor Trail and Mount Franklin Trail.<br /> <br /> The Rock Harbor Trail continues along the shoreline for about another 1.8 miles to Three Mile Campground. Three Mile Campground is located right on the shore. Trek over one of the tallest ridge sections on the island. This trail section passes near Mount Desor, the tallest point on Isle Royale at about 1,362 feet elevation. Finding the summit can be tricky because the ridge is completely covered in trees. This section winds its way through a mostly deciduous forest. After trekking through a wooded wilderness hikers come upon a scenic view of Lake Desor. </p> <h4>Diverge from the Greenstone and Hike to Malone</h4> <p>At the Ishpeming Tower is the junction to Ishpeming Trail that leads to Malone Bay Campground. This alternative route is about 7 miles long. The Ishpeming Trail is less traveled and is minimally maintained for the ultimate wilderness experience. Water access for purifying isn't available until about 3.5 miles down the Ishpeming Trail at Siskiwit Lake. There is a ranger station at Malone Bay that is staffed intermittently. Check in with the park before your trip for the most up-to-date information. There is a dock at Malone Bay where the ferry, the <em><a href="https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/voyageur-ii.htm">Voyageur II</a></em>, offers passenger transportation. Reservations for the<em> Voyageur II</em> are necessary ahead of time. Once you climb on top of the ridge you are rewarded with an excellent view (on a clear day) of Siskiwit Lake, Siskiwit Bay, Malone Bay, and the Isle Royale Lighthouse. This trail section offers forested wilderness, ridgetop treks, and scenic viewing points sprinkled throughout. Ishpeming Tower will surprise you at the end of this trail section as it pops out of the forest without warning. Water access for purifying isn't available until about 3.5 miles down the Ishpeming Trail at Siskiwit Lake. There is a ranger station at Malone Bay that is intermittently staffed. The start of the hike hugs Washington Harbor and then cuts north towards Isle Royale’s north shore. The trail rolls up and down the actual Minong Ridge. Eventually a stream appears to the east of the trail, this is how you know you have almost reached the Huginnin Cove Campground. Make sure to take a break and enjoy the view of Lake Superior and Canada from the campground.</p> <h4><b>East Huginnin</b></h4> <p><strong>Mileage</strong>: about 3.3 miles<br /> The East Huginnin is a longer trail section and a favorite among many hikers. Start with the best, or save it for last—this section of trail will not disappoint. Starting from Windigo this trail follows the beginnign of the Minong Ridge Trail. At the junciton the East Huginnin cuts north. The trail rolls over the actual Minong Ridge and passes remnants from a Wendigo Mine exploration site. Continue until the trail moves adjacent to the northern shore of the island. This last section of trail before the campground offers scenic views of Lake Superior and Canada in the distance (on a clear day). The beach reaches the treeline and a short trail helps hikers cross Senter Point—a peninsula jetting out into Siskiwit Bay. The trail follows Carnelian Beach until a trailhead appears signifying the path turning inland. This is the last opportunity to purify water on this section of trail. The trail passes an old well and later a part of the historic Island Mine. There will be a stack of rocks and behind this rubble is an old steam engine back in the woods. The Feldtmann Lake trailhead is located just southwest of the dock and pavilion. The trail begins snug against the harbor shoreline offering views of Beaver Island and Washington Harbor. After about a mile in, the trail cuts inland and ascends the ridge. The trail rides the ridge and passes a scenic overlook called <a href="https://www.nps.gov/places/grace-creek-overlook.htm">Grace Creek Overlook</a>. This is a fine spot for a water break overlooking Grace Creek, Grace Harbor, and Lake Superior. The trail continues along the ridge and then descends gently downward towards Grace Creek—previously seen from the overlook. Small rocks fill the trail shortly after passing Grace Creek. These rocks are remnants of an old Lake Superior shoreline. From here the trail weaves gently downward through wooded areas to Feldtmann Lake. Overgrown vegetation lines the trail on the descent to Feldtmann Lake. At times it may feel like you are swimming through vegetation. Long pants and sleeves are recommended.
